Announcing the second edition of Books + Flow, an embodied queer book club!
“Johnny Appleseed” by Joshua Whitehead
Saturday, May 13th
3:30-5:30pm
About the book:
Johnny Appleseed is a heartfelt, shattering novel narrated by Johnny, a Two-Spirit/Indigiqueer, cybersex working youth navigating identity both on the “rez” and in colonized Canada at large. I love this book for the relationships that Whitehead creates between its characters who love one another sincerely and imperfectly. Whitehead effortlessly composes memories of Johnny’s grandmother, mother, and childhood best friend/lover into poetic anecdotes that offer an intergenerational look at the contemporary indigenous experience within colonized lands in a way that is erotic, wise, and queer as f***
This collaboration, facilitated by Russell Lepley and Charlie Pugsley, combines queer literature with movement exploration to create an unconventional book club. We read a book together and then meet at F+F for an event structured in three parts:
40 minutes of guided movement exploring themes from the book
10 minute break for tea & refreshments
70 minutes of group conversation discussing, sharing, and connecting with the book.
No dance experience is required for the movement portion. It will be accessible for all abilities and structured to provide agency to opt in or out of participation.
The cost is $30 (not including the book) or pay-what-you-can. Our priority for this club is to create community and conversation and we value your voice. Let us know if there is a rate that would work better for you… we want to be reading and dancing with you. Email us at info@flux-flow.com to set up a pay-what-you-can rate.
Participants are encouraged to purchase the book from Bookspace but it is not a requirement. Please engage in this book club in whatever way makes it accessible for you.
We are very excited to read and move with you all!!
